Body temperature
A dog’s
normal body temperature lies between 38 and 39 degrees, measured using a
regular thermometer in the rectum.
Pulse
Normally between 60-140 bpm. The pulse is best
felt on the inside of the thigh.
Breathing
Normally 10 – 30 breaths / minute.
Teeth
28 baby teeth give way for 42 permanent teeth, usually between the
10th and 26th week. Examine your dog’s teeth regularly so that he
become accustomed to this.
Heat
The first heat varies for the different breeds. In general the first
heat usually rears its head between the age of 7 and 9 months, and
then about twice a year. It lasts for about 3 weeks.
Pregnancy period
Normally 63 days and nights, but can vary between 58 and 68 days and
nights.
Imagined pregnancy
The bitch acts exactly as if she is expecting. She becomes restless,
uneasy and nests. This is regular behaviour in bitches with imagnes
pregnancy and begins about 2 months post heat, around the time she
would have been givib\ng birth if really pregnant. She may also
begin to produce milk. Contact your veterinarian for further
information.
Uterus infection
After the heat the risk of a uterus infection increases. The bitch’s
general well-being decreases, accompanied by an increase in thirst.
If you suspect this, please contact your veterinarian.
